A must read for corporate and entrepreneurs alike, the book is open to anybody trying to make sense of this increasingly complex world which we inhibit!

Indian Writing:

Remarkable writing! Be ‘Enlightened’!
“The Prince and the Sannyasi” by Partha Chatterjee @ Rs.395/- (Pgs 650)
The story of the Kumar of Bhawal and the secret history of Indian nationalism is a book like no other that you may have read in recent times. The ‘Bhawal Sannyasi Case’ may have been long closed but Partha Chatterjee attempts to refresh our memory by this first attempt at academic history to deal with the case. The subject is a sensational trial of the 1930s and 1940s of an event of 1909, set against British India vis-à-vis a landed family of East Bengal. The book is a fabulous narrative woven around a real life story in which the truth turns out to be undecidable. When a Sannyasi returns to his kingdom to stake his claim as the long given up dead prince, the legal battle that ensures with witnesses and cross examination on both sides, what emerges is a fascinating battle of narrative history. The book also carries accounts of several women who played roles quite different from those depicted in the judicial discourse back in 1946 which gives the story its essential, alternate perspective! Don’t miss this book. Partha Chatterjee is a true worthy heir to the likes of Amitav Ghosh.

Some things you know all your life...
I found a gorgeous poetry blog yesterday and have been up to my heart and soul in lines like...
I want the pepper’s fury and the salt’s tenderness.
I want the virtue of the evening rain, but not its gossip.
I want the moon’s intuition, but not its questions.
I want the malice of nothing on earth.
I want to enter every room in a strange electrified city
and find you there
and...
...just pay attention, then patch
a few words together and don’t try
to make them elaborate, this isn’t
a contest but the doorway
into thanks, and a silence in which
another voice may speak.
Here's the thing. I work in a newsroom. I am bombarded by war and rebellion and natural disasters. I've made special reports on Egypt and dispassionately updated the number of deaths in Libya.
Despite the fact that some of the best poems are born during the bleakest of times, poetry for me is a refuge. It is also an addiction and a breath taker.
It's easy to explain it as plain old romanticism, and maybe it is just that. I'm not sure though, if the shiver I get while looking at...
What if by story you mean the shortcut home,
but I mean voices in a room by the sea
while days go by?...
but I mean voices in a room by the sea
while days go by?...
can be explained away at all. And maybe it doesn't need to be. Maybe it's sufficient to say that when Mary Oliver says...
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting--
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting--
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
...life resumes its urgency and its peace
And when Neruda writes...
because of you, the heady perfumes of summer pain me; because of you, I again seek out the signs that precipitate desire: shooting stars, falling objects
...
...I fall just that little bit more in love
Enough said :)

Students at twistntales !
We have always had students working in the evenings. They bring their joy and energy and really perk us up.
We also have summer trainees ... we take them after Class 12. But this year, we have had parents and kids asking for "something to do" "you don't have to pay us" ! Cute ! Some of them as young as Class 6 !
But no, we will take them after they are 18, and we will make them work ! and we will pay them !

An ode of thanks !
twistntales started in March 2002 with 5 lakhs capital and a small prayer on 28th of March. With the interiors then costing us 2.5 lakhs, we were left with half the amount to start and sustain our business.
As we enter our 10th year of operations, we look back at the last 9 years with an immense sense of satisfaction and pleasure.
It is a vindication of many things.
• That “good quality” will seek and find its own market.
• It is nice to be happy and spread happiness.
• “Word of mouth” is the best form of advertisement and it is free.
• And a “raving fan” gets you more raving fans.
• Folks understand difficult times.
• Relationships are nurtured through good interactions.
• “Old School” values which have stood the test of time, still has place in our lives.
All these and more. Over the years, you have given us place in your hearts and on the bookshelves. As a community bookstore, we have seen the neighbourhood children attend our workshops, grow into responsible young adults. Our monthly mails reach out to close to 3500+ persons, and an occasional hi/hullo from those beyond the far seas warms us up. Our students who are/have working/worked part-time at the Store from Tejal/ Mridula to the current Lijya/ Priyanka have grown tremendously richer in the process of their interactions with you. The pleasure that we have got in identifying good books for you to pick is incomparable. The intangibles far far outweigh the tangibles.
Will reading sustain? Will traditional independent bookstores continue to exist in a few years? If books are available as downloads, what value-add do we bring to your reading pleasure? Yes, these are questions that we need to find answers for.
We are still working this out. Based on some of your suggestions, a few opportunities are being explored. Do continue to write to us, and provide us with your feedback and suggestions.
We understand customers have a choice and respect it. And feel humbled when you choose us to buy your book. Thank you, we have survived, ridden over recessionary times and confidently look to the future - all because of you.
Do join us in our 9th anniversary celebrations tomorrow at the store, 27th Mar, Sun, 6pm onwards. To make sure your celebration is happy too, we will be offering 15% discount on all books in the Store for tomorrow (all day long).

“Faster Cheaper Better: The 9 Levers for Transforming How Work Gets Done” by Michael Hammer and Lisa W. Hershman @ Rs.960/- (pgs 302)
The guru of Re-engineering, Michael Hammer introduced us to process work flows in early 1990s. In this path breaking follow-up, the duo identifies the 9 levers for transformation in the workplace. Michael Hammer passed away in September 2008. Lisa Hershman, the CEO of Hammer and Company has finished the work of this genius. Faster, Cheaper, Better isn’t about the way work is organized, it is about how we want our work to be. Can we move out of a “worm’s eye view” to a “bird’s eye view”?
Chap. 1 talks of end to end work processes and Chap. 2 about measurement. What do we measure rather than how do we measure. Chapters 3 and 4 talks of process owners and performers, Chapters 5 and 6 about corporate culture and governance. Chapter 7 talks of the 9 levers and opens chapters 8 to 12 to discuss case studies of 5 companies that embraced end to end process with sharply different results.
This is a book to read. Re-read, think, process and apply. And to keep. Buy it. It will be treasured for the insight it adds to your work.

"Dear Ragini" being presented on Sun, 16th Jan

Hi all,
Greetings of Makar Sankranti, Lohri, and the good tidings of the harvest festival! May the good Sun Lord bless us with cheaper vegetables and pulses!
Jan 12th is Swami Vivekanand’s birthday, and this day is celebrated as National Youth Day in our Country. As part of the National Youth Week celebrations, we bring you a youth group from Kolkata.
On January 3rd, 2010 “LOK” was formed by Soumyajit Majumdar, Mass Communication and Videography student of St.Xaviers, Kolkata with his artistically and creatively inclined friends mostly from St.Xaviers College, Jadavpur University, Presidency College, Loreto College and some other premiere schools and colleges of Kolkata. It involves young minds engaged in photography, filmmaking, music, theatre, dance, creative writing, fine arts etc.
What seemed like a youth creative arts movement in Kolkata is now taking shape of a national youth creative arts movement with LOK spreading its wings to Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and other cities within a year of its inception.
PROJECT YUVA
LOK has conceptualized "PROJECT YUVA-dream young" - a one-of-its-kind national youth movement mainly in terms of creative arts. The aim is to connect the Indian youth on a common platform and facilitate interaction and exchange among them.
The curtain raiser for "PROJECT YUVA-dream young" was held at Gyan Manch, Kolkata on January 3rd, 2011, with a national youth carnival.
After the successful launch of “PROJECT YUVA-DREAM young”, LOK is set to begin the “PROJECT YUVA” journey to other cities and also celebrate the National Youth Week in India (Jan 12-Jan 19) with a reading session of the musical play “Dear Ragini” (involving dialogues, live songs-vocals, accoustic guitars, dhol/tabla, violin) and also an informal discussion session on “Youth For Change” - the need for a national youth movement and also on the prospect of creative arts in India among the youth
LOK and PROJECT YUVA will be inaugurated in
Ahmedabad (NID auditorium) 15th January 5.30 pm,
Pune (twistntales, Aundh)- 16th January 5pm,Bangalore (Oxford bookstore, 19th January) 7pm
About “Dear Ragini”
It is a heart-warming rendition of a love letter from social activist Shekhar to his lover Ragini on one side (about his hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats in the villages where he is continually terrorized by the "system") and on the other side the tale of a poor artisan in a kingdom of misrule -these two parallel stories dealing with the condition of creative people/activists in India. The play is interspersed with live original songs (both western and Indian folk numbers - guitars, violin, dholak and other percussion have been used) which form the heart of the play and adds to the entertainment quotient of the play.
The long forgotten ancient Indian style of story-telling "Katha" has been effectively used in this musical. In an age when there are so many flashy story-telling methods available, “Dear Ragini” confirms that simple narration remains effective.
You are cordially invited to our event and we request you to spread the word to all young photographers, musicians, filmmakers, theatricals, artists, designers, activists, students of arts, media and those who support an organized national youth forum and movement in the country.
Venue: twistntales
Date: 16th Jan, Sunday, 5pm sharp
Duration: 1 hour
Looking forward to seeing you on Sun,

Book Launch, "Flute in the Forest"

Leela Gour Broome was excited, so were we with her first book ! Deepak Dalal, our chief guest almost didn't make it - had a flat tyre, driving in from khadakwasla ... but the numerous fans of Nature Trails (we are one too !) and the kids who are grown up, and the kids who are now 12 years - all of us had a real rocking time !
The book too is beautiful. If you love the forests and haven't read this one, pick it up ! We were so glad to be launching the book !

What a wonderful Play !
Alka Joshi, Director of the play, "Mulghi Zali Ho" is social activist with Stree Mukti Sanghatana, since 1983. This play was first staged in 1982, and Alka herself on seeing the play, was inspired to join the organisation the following year.
Alka now heads Abhiyukti, the women's wing of Lokayat, an NGO comprising of working professionals and students. Lokayat works on many civic and social issues.
Yesterday, they were in twistntales, to present "Mulghi Zali Ho", a street play on women's issues and domestic violence. A powerful play, they held the audience spellbound by their music, songs, humour and sarcasm.

Mail sent to twistntales@yahoogroups on 6th Dec'10

Dear all,
Street Play @ twistntales! Don't Miss!
Press the Bell / Bhajao Ghanti
The Violence Against Women (VAW) fortnight is observed all over the world from 25th November to 10th December.
twistntales is happy to present a street play, "Mulgi Zali Ho" by members of Lokayat, Pune. This play was originally presented by Stree Mukti Sanghatana in 1982, and has been successfully running for 28 years.
On Saturday, 11th Dec, 8 pm, at twistntales
25th November is the day observed as VAW day and 10th December is the Human Rights Day.
Between these two days the fortnight is observed as VAW fortnight. Previously, 25 November was observed in Latin America and a growing number of other countries around the world as "International Day Against Violence Against Women". With no standard title, it was also referred to as "No Violence Against Women Day" and the "Day to End Violence Against Women". It was first declared by the first Feminist Encuentro for Latin America and the Caribbean held in Bogota, Colombia (18 to 21 July 1981). At that Encuentro, women systematically denounced gender violence from domestic battery, to rape and sexual harassment to state violence including torture and abuses of women political prisoners.
The date was chosen to commemorate the lives of the Mirabal sisters. It originally marked the day that the three Mirabal sisters from the Dominican Republic were violently assassinated in 1960 during the Trujillo dictatorship (Rafael Trujillo 1930-1961). The day was used to pay tribute to the Mirabal sisters, as well as a global recognition of gender violence.
UNO was compelled to declare this day as VAW day in 1999.
We are happy to present “Mulgi Zali Ho” on Saturday, 11th Dec, at 8pm. Please be there on time. Chairs for senior citizens only. Standing room only, please make it to twistntales early.
Lokayat is an NGO based in Pune, and takes up social and civic issues. It comprises working professionals who give their evenings and weekends to a good cause. They use novel techniques of protest, one of them being street plays.
twistntales has supported the street play form of protest from its early days.
“Mulgi Zali Ho” is a musical play about the plight of the girl child, with powerful and biting humour and a simple form. It has touched the chords of the masses. This group has been performing this for years. The play raises questions and problems but also ends with solutions to the problems. The play also defines the direction as to what women with problems should do in our lives. It starts with making obeisance to the work of those who fought for injustice to women like Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Maharshi Karve, Raja Rammohan Roy, Dr.Ambedkar etc. It speaks of the condition of women even today. It talks of the reactions within the family if a girl is born. It talks of marital relations, emotions between husband and wife. And ends, with a positive empowered way out. And that is why it is very important. Everyone speaks about the inferiority complex of women or re-building self esteem, or empowering women, but few talk of how these things can happen in everyday life. “Mulgi Zali Ho” gives courage to women to stand up and fight back.
Be there, don’t miss this!
Regards,
From the team at,
